Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)

An Emerging Social Responsibiity Model

ESG is a continuously emerging social responsibility model that has its origins in investment practices of the 1960's.  Even in today's corporate and philanthropic environments, ESG endures as a pathway for organizations to contribute to the cause of environmental sustainability, social health and wellness, and responsible governance, while pursuing their unique organizational mission.  ESG initiatives are normally fulfilled through intergration of key ESG principals and strategies that support working toward and contributing to the greater good from a society-level perspective. What is important to underscore, particularly as it relates to the nonprofit sector, is that ESG is not designed to divert from your organization's original mission, it's a value add.

While there is no universal definition of ESG, initiatives generally involve the adoption of values and principles that represent an organization's interest and commitment to support sustainable change across the ESG spectrum including strategies that drive a fund investment approach that fundamentally "does no harm".
